Iranian President Hassan Rohani on Saturday called on Muslims around the world to unite against the United States, instead of “rolling out red carpets to criminals”.

Donald Trump disengaged the United States from the Vienna Agreement (July 2015) on the Tehran nuclear program last May, and since then has imposed two waves of US sanctions on Iran.

“To submit to America dominated by America would be treason to our religion … and to future generations in the region,” President Rohani said at an international conference on Islamic unity in Tehran. His speech was broadcast live on national television.

“We have the choice between unfolding red carpets to criminals, or forcefully stand against injustice and remain faithful to our prophet, our Koran, and our Islam,” he said, clearly targeting Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf countries that have close ties with Washington.

Shiite Iran and Sunni-dominated Saudi Arabia are rivals in the Middle East and support opposing camps in conflicts like Syria and Yemen, as well as different factions in Iraq and Lebanon.

“We are ready to defend the interests of the Saudis in the face of terrorism, aggression and the superpowers (…) and we are not asking for 450 billion dollars in exchange,” Hassan Rohani said, alluding to contracts passed by the Saudis with the United States.
