A close associate of Marshal Khalifa Haftar, whose fighters hold a large part of Libya and are trying to seize Tripoli, was Wednesday visiting Moscow, a sign of the proximity between Haftar and Russia.
Kheiri Al Tamimi, Haftar’s chief of staff, took part in the Moscow Conference on International Security, organized by the Russian army. Russian Defense and Foreign Ministers spoke at the inaugural session of the conference.
The Russian army has made no secret of its support for Haftar, based in Benghazi in Cyrenaica, whose Libyan National Army (LNA) has launched an offensive against Tripoli, home to the National Unity Government (GNA) recognized by the international community.
Asked about Russia’s military support for Haftar, Al Tamimi replied that “Russia will not have a free hand until the (arms) embargo is lifted.” When this is the case, we will intensify our cooperation”.
