Benin: the hostages released, two French soldiers killed


Friday, May 10, the two hostages kidnapped in Benin on May 1 were released. The operation in northern Burkina Faso resulted in the release of two more hostages, but killed two soldiers.

Patrick Picque and Laurent Lassimouillas are finally released. The two French tourists, who went to visit the Pendjari Park (Benin), had disappeared ten days ago, while the body of their guide was found mutilated, Saturday, May 4. This is the end of a long anguish, Friday, May 10, for relatives of former hostages. “It gives me a shock, we are relieved,” says Denise Picque, the mother of Patrick Picque.

  • Two soldiers were killed during the intervention

The operation was conducted in the greatest secrecy. French special forces tracked the kidnappers. It was urgent, because if the hostages were in Mali, there would have been almost no chance of them being released. The military seized the last opportunity on the side of Burkina Faso to recover the two French, but also an American and a South Korean. During the intervention, two soldiers were killed.
