Heavy fighting has been fought between Taliban insurgents and Islamic State (IS) group members in eastern Afghanistan since Monday, local authorities said on Wednesday.

The clashes are taking place in two districts of Nangarhar province, bordering Pakistan, where the IS has attacked villages controlled by the Taliban.

“IS fighters have taken control of six villages in Khogyani and Shirzad districts, but clashes continue,” said Sohrab Qaderi, a member of the provincial council. Five hundred families had to flee the fighting.
