Iran: Explosion of a car bomb in the Chabahar port

A suicide car bomb attack left at least three people dead and several injured Thursday in Iran’s Chabahar port, near the border with Pakistan, Iran’s media reports.

“This morning, a bomb inside a car exploded near a police station in Chabahar, killing three people and injuring others,” the acting governor of Chabahar told state television. Rahmdel Bameria. “The kamikaze activated his explosives after stopping in front of the Chabahar police headquarters.”

Mohammad Hadi Marashi, deputy governor for security, said the attack, which was not claimed, killed two policemen.

According to the IRNA news agency, the blast, which occurred near a police station, was followed by gunfire.

Chabahar port is located in the Sunni majority province of Sistan-Baluchestan, which has long been plagued by drug trafficking and separatist tensions.

In 2010, a double suicide bombing attack on a Shia mosque in the region killed 28 people. The attack was claimed by a Sunni separatist group, Jundullah (or Soldiers of God).

Tehran accuses Saudi Arabia, its main rival in the Middle East, and its traditional US foe for funding most of the armed groups in the region, accusations dismissed by Ryad and Washington.

Iran also accuses Pakistan of harboring activists and threatens to repress them in Pakistan without action on the part of Islamabad.

Chabahar is a free zone and is home to a port complex supported by India.
