A journalist working for the English service of the Iranian state-owned Press TV has been arrested in the United States for unspecified facts, her employer said Wednesday.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry demanded his immediate release.
Marziyeh Hashemi, who was born in the United States, was arrested Sunday at the St. Louis International Airport, Missouri, and transferred to Washington where she was taken into custody at an FBI center.
According to Press TV, no charges were brought against him. Declared under the name of Melanie Franklin, she changed after her conversion to Islam, said the channel, according to which her guardians forbade her to wear the veil and served him pork.
“We condemn the illegal arrest of Press TV reporter and presenter Marziyeh Hashemi and her inhuman treatment in Washington prison,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Irna told reporters.
Hashemi was in the United States to visit his family. No comments could be obtained from the FBI.
