Ivan Golunov, 36, is one of Russia’s best-known investigative journalists.
Last Thursday, he was arrested in the center of Moscow. According to a police spokesman, four grams of synthetic drugs were found in his backpack and other bags of narcotics were found at his home.
The journalist has been formally charged with “drug trafficking” and incurs up to 15 years in prison. The latter claims his innocence.
His media, Meduza, believes that Ivan Golunov was trapped because of his investigations of corruption and embezzlement cases.
“Trumped up charges”
According to Illya Zhegulev, who works for Meduza, almost all the investigations conducted by Ivan Golunov can be detrimental to the interests of high-ranking people: “In most cases, to the interests of officials or representatives of the armed forces. The Association Without Border said it was very worried about the arrest, and the “highly suspicious behavior of the police”, which suggests, according to the NGO, “trumped up charges, to silence the journalist”.
This Saturday, Ivan Golunov was transported to the hospital. According to his lawyer, the journalist suffers from a fractured rib and a concussion.
According to Meduza media, Golunov was beaten by the police during his arrest and later at the police station.
