DUBAI (Reuters) – The international community is opposed to the decisions made by Donald Trump, the supreme leader of the Iranian Revolution said on Saturday as Washington prepares to reinstate sanctions against Tehran‘s oil and banking sectors.
“The world is opposed to all decisions coming from Trump,” Ali Khamenei, quoted by Iran’s national television, told a rally of thousands of students.
“The Americans did not achieve their goal of re-establishing the domination they had (prior to 1979) America has been held in check by the Islamic Republic for the last 40 years,” he said.
Washington will restore Monday significant sanctions against oil sales from Iran and against the Iranian banking sector, to force the Islamic Republic to start negotiations on stopping its nuclear energy and ballistic missile programs, and to stop supporting Shiites in regional conflicts in the Middle East.
Most of the international sanctions against Iran, the world’s third-largest oil exporter, were lifted in early 2016 under the Vienna Agreement, concluded in July 2015, by which Iran agreed to revise down its uranium enrichment program, considered by many as intended to endow Iran with atomic weapons.
The European Union, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, co-signatories to Russia and China, of the Vienna Agreement, said Friday in a joint statement regret the US President’s decision to reinstate sanctions against Iran.
