Mysterious coup attempt in Ethiopia


The chief of staff and the president of one of the nine provinces of the country were assassinated Saturday in two separate attacks.

Ethiopia is in mourning, the mind filled with questions under the flag at half-mast. Monday, two days after a double bombing that killed a regional leader and the chief of staff, the questions remain numerous. On Sunday, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed referred to an “attempted coup d’├ętat” against the executive of one of the country’s nine provinces, Amhara. Many, however, doubt the reality of this for the least curious local coup.

The violence began Saturday around 19 hours. Amhara President Ambachew Mekonnen was shot dead by a “commando” while leading a meeting in the regional capital, Bahir Dar. In the fight, which would have lasted several hours, a counselor and the prosecutor were also killed.
