He had supervised the delicate Russian investigation for almost two years. The US Department of Justice’s number two, Rod Rosenstein, announced Monday (April 29th) that he will step down on May 11th.

This long-awaited departure follows the closure of investigations by Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller, who has not found evidence of an agreement between Moscow and Donald Trump’s campaign team in the 2016 presidential election.

“Our elections are safer and our citizens better informed of the secret efforts of foreign powers to influence our elections,” writes Rod Rosenstein in a letter to President Trump, whom he thanks for the “courtesy and humor” he has shows in their exchanges.
