Taiwan accuses China of strengthening infiltration operations

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen accused China of reinforcing its infiltration operations and interference in Taiwan and asked national security agencies to oppose the Beijing initiatives.

“The Chinese Communist Party continues to carry out provocative acts, destroying the status quo on both sides of the Taiwan Strait,” she told reporters after a meeting on national security .

The Taiwanese president did not mention specific incidents, but mentioned Chinese attempts to interfere in elections and spread false news.

The tension mounted a notch last month with naval maneuvers conducted by the Chinese navy in the Taiwan Strait and around the island.

Beijing suspects Tsai Ing-Wen of wanting to reach a formal declaration of Taiwan’s independence, an unacceptable red line for China, which still views the island as a secessionist province.
