Tehran : The Iranian authorities announced on Wednesday the arrest of a US citizen, confirming information leaked earlier this week by the US press.
The New York Times reported Monday that Michael White, a veteran of the US Navy, was arrested in July for reasons that remain unknown while he was visiting the Islamic Republic.
A dispatch from the Irna agency, which does not mention the reasons that led to the arrest, quoted Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi as saying that he had informed Washington of the arrest.
According to Joanne White, the inmate’s mother, Michael White, traveled to Iran several times to meet his Iranian girlfriend.
The arrest is likely to further aggravate US-Iran relations that have deteriorated since Donald Trump came to power and reinstated sanctions against Tehran.
