With 12 dead, it is the most deadly shooting of 2019 in the United States.
A municipal employee of a seaside resort in Virginia Beach, on the US East Coast, opened fire on Friday, May 31, in a public building in the city, killing 12 people before being shot dead by police.
The investigation is ongoing and the authorities have not yet given any indication of the name or motives of the shooter, merely indicating that he was a long-time employee of the city’s public services. According to CNN’s information, his name was DeWayne Craddock, who was 40 years old and had obtained his weapons legally.
It was shortly after 16h Friday (22h French time) when this man, “a longtime employee”, entered a municipal building and began “immediately to shoot blind on all the victims,” said the chief from the local police, James Cervera.
Spotting the floor where the shooter was by the sound of bullets, police intervened. “It was a long exchange of fire between the four policemen and the suspect.” According to the police, the shooter was armed with a .45 caliber pistol equipped with a silencer and reloaded several times. The weapon and many magazines emptied were found on the spot.
Hit, the shooter that the police tried in vain to resuscitate succumbed to his injuries.
According to James Cervera, the police “prevented this individual from committing even worse carnage in this building” that could accommodate up to 400 people. The scene of the shooting is akin to a “war zone”.
